Tony Joseph began his career with Great Lakes Recycling in 1994 and stayed with the company until 2002. In September 2016, he rejoined the GLR family to run the brokerage division and now serves as GLR president, working throughout the Detroit metro area.
“The Rosen family brought me under their wings into this industry. They empowered me to learn, grow, and make mistakes, and helped me recover from those mistakes with care, patience, and guidance,” says Tony. “My mission now is to expand and grow this 90-year-old brand and keep that legacy alive.”
From business development to human resources, Tony wears many hats as GLR president. As Chief Guidance Officer, he sets the company’s objectives, ensuring that GLR is the most hands-on, engaged, and customer-focused firm in the recycling market. As Industry Guru, Tony manages the GLR brokerage team and sets operational oversight of all materials movement. He is the Lead Negotiator and Marketer of GLR materials with end-commodity processors, creating joint ventures and partnerships with complementary service providers. As Chief Estimator, Tony right-sizes customers’ recycling programs and creates new “direct-to-mill” commodity streams that develop new lanes of material to GLR’s mills and processors.
“Working at GLR is different and exciting every day. It’s fast-paced, ever-changing, and challenges me to use quick-thinking and problem-solving skills to save the day,” says Tony, who has received recognition from the Suppliers Partnership for the Environment for sustainability efforts. Work, however, is not just work for Tony. He is devoted to the backbone of GLR – its employees. “The greatest thing about working at GLR is the people. It’s a family. It’s a team.”
Communicating directly with customers daily via email and phone, Tony reinforces the GLR goal to be interactive, collaborative partners with every customer. “We want to develop the trust that our customers’ sustainability efforts will always be met with as much creativity, transparency of process, and straightforward answers as we hope to receive ourselves,” he says. Dedication takes on new meaning with Tony’s energy and experience. “You don’t get to 90 years in an industry without expertise, commitment, and loyalty to ingenuity, our customers, our mills, and our carriers.”
A resident of Macomb, Michigan, Tony enjoys boating and sporting events. He treasures time spent with his family and friends and is very involved in the daily lives of his two adult sons.
